The Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has officially appointed Professor Adamu Ahmed as the institution’s new Vice-Chancellor.

The announcement was made in a statement on Wednesday by Auwalu Umar, the university’s Director of Public Affairs, following a 209th special council meeting presided over by Mahmud Yayale-Ahmed, the council’s chairman.

According to the statement, the appointment of Professor Ahmed comes after a distinguished career spanning over three decades at ABU, where he has played a significant role in shaping the institution’s academic landscape.

Professor Ahmed, an expert in urban and regional planning, has spent his entire academic career at ABU, rising through the ranks from a student to a professor. His academic journey began at the same institution, where he obtained his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees.

Over the years, he has held several key leadership positions, including Head of Urban and Regional Planning, Deputy Director of ABU Consultancy Services, and Director of the Directorate of University Advancement.

Beyond his contributions to ABU, Professor Ahmed has also made his mark on the national stage. In June 2024, President Bola Tinubu appointed him as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Education, Kano.

His vast experience in academia and administration is expected to bring renewed focus to research, student development, and institutional growth at ABU.

With his appointment, the university community is optimistic about the future of ABU under his leadership. As he assumes office, many anticipate policies that will further elevate ABU’s status as a leading institution in Nigeria and Africa.
