Accra Flooding: 'Your silence is painful' - Vincent Assafuah chides government

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has criticised the ruling government for its ‘silence’ on the flooding in parts of Accra, which has caused extensive damage to properties.

According to him, he believes the government should have issued a communique in response to reports of the floods, addressing the issue and expressing condolences to those affected and displaced by the disaster.

Assafuah, also a legal practitioner, added that the government's inability to address the matter does not bode well, as it fails to demonstrate leadership.

He argued that good leadership requires more than just action but also demands communication and empathy in times of crisis.

“Yesterday’s downpour has left parts of Accra, especially East Legon Hills, Lakeside, and Pantang in distress. According to media reports, three lives have been lost and many more displaced by the floods. My heart goes out to every family affected. This pain is one we all feel,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday, May 19, 2025.

He added, “What makes it even more painful is the silence. As of now, there’s been no official word from government to commiserate with the grieving families or those displaced. In moments like this, leadership is not just about action it’s also about presence, empathy, and words that comfort.”

Commiserating with the affected victims, the lawmaker, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stated that the losses incurred could have been prevented if proper and effective measures had been implemented to address the recurring issue of perennial flooding.

He therefore urged both citizens and the government to take greater responsibility and implement better measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

“This tragedy reminds us again of how vulnerable we are, and how preventable some of these losses could be. We must do better. For those we’ve lost. For those still hurting. For the future,” he said.

His comments follow footage capturing parts of the nation's capital, Accra, and the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, being submerged due to the rainstorm that affected the southern parts of Ghana on Saturday, May 17, 2025, and Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Viral videos from the two cities show major streets completely submerged under water, with vehicles being carried away by the floodwater.

Some road users were also left stranded because most of the roads were impassable, forcing some of them to take cover under bridges.

In Accra, areas like Ofankor, Kaneshie, Circle, Awudome, and Ablekuma were heavily flooded.

At Agbogba, some residents were captured in a viral video praying as the rains took over their homes.

A viral video also showed the Kumasi Airport Roundabout area completely flooded.
