Abuja Naval Officer Kidnapping and Rescue

A joint security task force successfully rescued Cynthia Akor, a Naval officer abducted in Abuja, along with two civilians, marking a significant victory against criminal activities in the region. The operation, executed with precision and coordination, underscores the commitment of Nigerian security forces to safeguarding citizens and combating kidnapping.

The rescue operation, which took place between 2:00 AM and 5:30 AM on Sunday, involved a combined effort from the military, officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), local hunters, and vigilante groups. This multi-agency approach highlights the importance of collaboration in addressing complex security challenges.

Cynthia Akor and the two civilians were initially abducted on Friday around 7:34 PM at the Mamman Vatsa Estate gate along Mpape Road, Abuja. The assailants, heavily armed, ambushed vehicles, leading to the abduction. Following the abduction, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of ₦500 million for the Naval officer and ₦200 million each for the two civilians, indicating a highly organized and audacious criminal operation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Isyaku Sharu, in charge of operations for the FCT Command, confirmed the rescue, stating that an intensive search-and-rescue operation was immediately launched upon receiving the distress call. The operation spanned across Mpape, Gidan Bawa, Anguwan Mu’azu, and Yelwa Hills, covering areas in both the FCT and Nasarawa State. This swift response demonstrates the efficiency and determination of the security forces to track down and neutralize criminal elements.

During the operation, four suspects were apprehended, and a sum of ₦3.5 million was recovered, believed to be proceeds from previous kidnapping activities. The successful recovery of this money serves as evidence of the suspects' involvement in multiple criminal operations, further emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and proactive law enforcement.

SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer in FCT, stated that at approximately 7:35 PM on the said date, heavily armed assailants attacked the Maman Vatsa Estate gate, blocked Mpape Road, and opened fire on moving vehicles before abducting the three victims. She added that shortly after the attack, the kidnappers contacted the victims’ families, demanding a ransom of ₦500 million for the naval officer and ₦200 million each for the two civilians. According to her, the Command mobilized a joint operation led by the Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit and comprising personnel of the Nigerian military, DSS, hunters, and members of the local Hunters’ Group. Acting on credible intelligence, between 2:00 AM and 5:30 AM on March 23, 2025, operatives traced the suspects to a Fulani resettlement in Anguwan Mu’azu and Yelwa Hills, Nasarawa State, where four suspects were arrested, and the victims were rescued unharmed.

The rescued victims are currently in stable condition and are receiving medical attention at the Nigerian Army Clinic in Abuja. Security measures have been reinforced in Mpape and surrounding areas to prevent future occurrences, assuring residents of their safety and security. This proactive step aims to deter potential criminals and maintain peace and order in the community.

The FCT Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining security. This collaborative approach between law enforcement and the public is essential for creating a safer environment for all.

This successful rescue operation highlights the ongoing efforts of Nigerian security forces to combat crime and ensure the safety and security of its citizens. The coordination between various security agencies and the use of intelligence-led operations demonstrate a commitment to proactive law enforcement and the protection of human lives. The incident serves as a reminder of the persistent security challenges in the region but also showcases the capability and determination of Nigerian authorities to address these issues effectively.
