23-yr-old woman falls to her death at Rajgad Fort

Pune: A 23-year-old woman died after falling into a valley at Rajgad Fort in Velhe taluka on Thursday around 5pm. The Pune Rural police, who identified her as Alandi resident Komal Shinde, said she was walking down from Bale Killa, the fort's highest point, when she reportedly lost balance and slipped off the trail, falling into the valley.Komal was accompanied by her husband, Satish, a labour contractor. They had been married for four years. The couple had climbed the fort earlier in the day, reaching Bale Killa around 3.30pm, and were returning to the base.A senior police officer said, "We received information from the control room about a distress call by Komal's husband, after which the police team, along with local trekkers and villagers, arrived at the spot and a search operation was launched." The rescue team located the woman around 9pm on the trekking route that goes towards Suvela Machi and Sanjivani, two popular tourist spots on the fort. "She was immediately taken to the nearby civic hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival," he said.Assistant police inspector of Velhe police station Nitin Khamgal said that the woman's body was handed over to her family on Friday after a postmortem, and a case of accidental death was registered. He said that the area around Rajgad Fort has been witnessing rain for the last few days, making the climb slippery. Hence, visitors must take precautions or avoid visiting the fort during the monsoon to avert such accidents, he added.
