Agitators for a power shift to the North Central region ahead of the 2027 general elections intensified consultations over the weekend with key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the North Central Governors’ Forum and Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule.
Leader of the agitators under the banner of the North Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM), Prof. K’tso Nghargbu, met with Governor Sule at the Government House in Lafia, where he presented a position paper outlining the group’s demands.
The push for a national consensus in favour of the North Central producing the next president has been gaining momentum, with agitators arguing that the zone has never produced a democratically elected president or vice president.
Daily Trust reports that, of Nigeria’s six geo-political zones — North West, North East, North Central, South East, South West, and South South — only the North Central and South East have never produced a democratically elected president. While the South East produced Dr. Alex Ekwueme as vice president during the Second Republic, the North Central has yet to achieve either position.
Prof. Nghargbu, a medical geologist and convener of the NCRM, emphasized the historical marginalisation of the zone, saying their mission was “aimed at rescuing the region from many years of endless tears and marginalisation.”
In response, Governor Sule urged members of the Movement to pursue their agenda with decency, discipline, and decorum.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Prof. Nghargbu disclosed that members of the Movement were also separately hosted by the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau; the Vice Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs and Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa; Senator Solomon Ewuga; and Senator Suleiman Asonya Adokwe.
Recently, the group was also received by other prominent Nigerians, including a former National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd), where they further canvassed support for their agenda.
