Perak State Police Chief Hisam Nordin said the Monday, June 9 accident occurred on the East-West Highway near the Thai border.
According to the police chief, a bus ferrying university students who were returning to school after an Islamic public holiday over the weekend lost control and rammed into a minivan.
Nordin disclosed that 13 people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.
“It looked like the bus had lost control and hit the minivan from behind. Some victims managed to get out on their own; some victims were thrown out while others were still (trapped) in the bus,” Nordin said, as reported by France 24.
According to the police report, 14 students from the Sultan Idris Education University, mostly aged between 21 and 23, attacked the bus attendant who died in the crash.
Thirty-three others were injured, with seven in critical condition, and were taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
Images from the scene shared by Daily Express Malaysia show how deadly the accident was, as the bus was extensively damaged.
The photos showed a green bus overturned on its right side with a smashed rear end cover, while the red minivan had slid into a ditch, with its windows blown out.
Police have launched investigations to establish whether the accident “involved human negligence or if it was a technical issue”
