CHP said officers assigned to its San Jose division were dispatched at 9:57 p.m. to a report of a crash in the center divider of Interstate 280 (I-280), north of De Anza Boulevard.

Officers said when they arrived at the scene, they located the victim in a vehicle suffering from apparent crash injuries. After the victim was taken to a nearby hospital, officers learned from medical staff that the individual’s injuries also included a gunshot wound to the head. The unidentified victim was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

CHP said detectives are working to establish a motive and identify a suspect. Investigators said that witness reports to 911 stated the victim might have been involved in a road rage incident or race before they crashed.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to call the CHP Investigative Tipline at 707-917-4491.
