Her lawyer, Chris Mhike, revealed that Zaba spent the night in custody before she later appeared at the Harare Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, July 2.

“Senior journalist and Editor of Zimbabwe Independent, Faith Zaba, was arrested by the ZRP yesterday (Tuesday) on allegations of undermining the authority of or insulting the President,” Mhike said in a statement.

Mhike added:

"After recording a warned and cautioned statement, police insisted on detaining her overnight, despite medical confirmation of her current severe illness."

Zim Live reported:

"Zimbabwe Independent editor Faith Zaba spent a second night in custody after a Harare magistrate postponed to tomorrow her bail application, this after prosecutors said they needed to verify her medical records submitted by her lawyers before deciding whether to oppose bail."

Here are some reactions from netizens:

@TheAfricanSafa1:

What is wrong with our judicial system?"

@nhiwatiwa86:

"No more press freedom....then what was their reason for going to war."

@CC78641327:

"Even if she was not ill, why detain her, give her bail, let her attend from home? Since when has a journalist's pen been mightier than a gun and your soldiers?"

@mpofumuseyamwa:

"What compensation is she going to get for these manufactured delays? If you deserve bail but are unnecessarily detained, it's already an unnecessary punishment."

In a separate story, two journalists in Kitale were previously injured while covering a chaotic raid on Governor George Natembeya's Milimani residence.

Evans Jaola of Nation Media Group and Osinde Obare of The Standard Group were attacked by a mob of rowdy youths protesting the presence of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officials at the governor's home.

Jaola, speaking to , described how he was manhandled by the youths while recording an incident in which some of Natembeya's supporters were deflating the tyres of five vehicles used by the EACC detectives.

Jaola sustained bruises and a shoulder injury, and his shirt was torn in the scuffle.

His mobile phone was briefly confiscated by the mob, who deleted his video footage before returning the device.

Osinde was also surrounded by the angry crowd but narrowly avoided serious harm thanks to the timely intervention of Felix Sialo, the Director of Communication in the Trans Nzoia county government.
