Youth group accuses Peter Obi of undermining Igbo presidential hopes
A socio-political youth group, Omenuko Ndigbo United, has expressed concern over what it describes as the lack of commitment by Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, to current opposition realignment efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Owerri and signed by its president, Comrade Benjamin Madu, the group criticised Mr. Obi for what it termed “political aloofness” in ongoing consultations aimed at forming a united opposition front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We are not happy with Peter Obi,” the group stated. “Instead of joining hands with others to rescue Nigeria, he seems to be focused only on himself. This is not the time for selfish politics.”
Omenuko Ndigbo United warned that a repeat of the political fragmentation seen during the 2023 elections — when several opposition candidates ran against each other — would again favour the APC and set back the South-East’s long-standing quest for the presidency.
The group argued that Mr. Obi’s perceived distance from opposition unity talks has raised doubts about his political intentions, and questioned whether he might be aiding the ruling party, deliberately or otherwise.
“This is the best time for Ndigbo to push for the presidency. But we need unity,” the statement continued. “If Obi pulls out of the coalition, it will be more difficult for an Igbo candidate to succeed in 2027 or even 2031.”
The group further noted recent public attacks on Mr. Obi by known APC sympathisers, such as former presidential aide Reno Omokri, and claimed such criticism mirrors tactics used during the 2023 election cycle to divide the opposition.
They also cited investigative journalist David Hundeyin, who has repeatedly warned that internal division within the opposition could hand the APC another victory.
Calling for clarity, the group urged Mr. Obi to make his political intentions known. “Nigerians deserve honesty. Peter Obi should stop pretending and tell us where he stands. We will not allow what happened in 2023 to happen again, especially if it will hurt the Igbo cause.”
