Yankees Manager Explains Controversial Decision to Pull Pitcher During No-Hitter

The New York Yankees recently experienced a thrilling near no-hitter at Yankee Stadium, a feat not accomplished since Domingo Germán's perfect game in 2023. Right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt was at the forefront of this impressive performance, throwing seven hitless innings against the Baltimore Orioles. This remarkable achievement made Schmidt only the 15th starting pitcher in Yankees history to complete seven hitless frames.
Despite Schmidt's dominant outing, manager Aaron Boone made the decision to pull him from the game before he could attempt to complete the no-hitter. Boone explained his choice by stating he observed Schmidt's power draining, leading him to conclude that Schmidt was "done" for the day. Boone emphasized that while pitchers might sometimes push through pitch limits, this particular game was not the right occasion for Schmidt to attempt to go the distance.
Although Schmidt had issued two walks earlier in the game, he successfully maintained his 23 1/3 inning scoreless streak throughout his start. Reflecting on the game, Schmidt expressed confidence that he could have achieved the no-hitter had he been allowed to continue. "Yeah, I would have thrown a no-hitter," he remarked after the game, indicating his belief in his ability to make "magic happen."
Schmidt also credited the vibrant atmosphere at Yankee Stadium for contributing to his energy levels during his performance. He noted the packed crowd, even on a warm and humid June afternoon, and how their energy was palpable. "Being able to do it in front of the home crowd, the energy, you could really feel it when you’re out there late in the game," Schmidt stated, appreciating the standing ovation he received after the seventh inning. He described the feeling of performing in front of such an engaged audience in that stadium as an indescribable experience where "all eyes are on you."
