Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for mountain counties; Chilly rain and possible thunderstorm activity ahead of warmup
(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Good afternoon and happy Wednesday! It has been a cold, wet, and generally miserable day across the Carolinas as cold rain has continued in Charlotte with significant icing up in the mountains. Wintry conditions across the mountains are now expected to continue until the early mornings on Thursday before warmer temperatures move in. Another storm system is expected this weekend with possible strong storms Sunday morning.
As for tonight and your Thursday, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for Ashe and Watauga counties until 7 AM Thursday morning for continued freezing rain this evening. Cold rain is expected in Charlotte throughout the evening and overnight hours as temperatures remain stable in the upper 30s. Some thunderstorm activity is possible early Thursday before rapidly warming temperatures move in during the afternoon with highs in the mid-60s.
Valentine’s Day will be dry and sunny across the region along with highs dropping back down into the low 50s after seeing subfreezing temperatures in the morning. Once we get to the weekend, we are tracking more wet and stormy weather ahead for the region. Showers are expected to start on Saturday as a warm front moves through followed by the potential for strong storms Sunday morning as the main cold front arrives. Behind the front much cooler conditions are on the way as we head into next week.
In the meantime, get ready for a nice warmup for Thursday! Have a great night!
