Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that the fight between him and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, is now over.

Wike said they both agreed to make peace after President Bola Tinubu stepped in and called them for a meeting in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Wike said both sides had finally agreed to stop fighting and work together in unity.

“We have all agreed to work with the governor, and he has also agreed to work with us. We belong to the same political family,” Wike said.

“Just like humans have disagreements, there is also a time to settle them. That has been done today, and we came to tell Mr. President. So for me, everything is settled,” he added.

He called on his supporters to also embrace peace and stop any further fights.

Governor Fubara also confirmed that President Tinubu had helped them resolve their differences, describing it as an important moment for Rivers State.

“For me, it’s a day to thank God. What we need in Rivers State is peace, and by God’s grace, tonight, with the help of Mr. President and our leaders, peace has returned,” Fubara said.

He promised to do everything possible to maintain the peace.

Recall that Wike and Fubara had been fighting for power in Rivers State, leading to division within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Their disagreement affected the State House of Assembly, resulting in many court cases. The Supreme Court later ruled in favour of lawmakers loyal to Wike.

However, this judgment led to fresh threats to impeach the Governor.

This is not the first time President Tinubu has tried to settle their fight. About eighteen months ago, he called them to Abuja, and Fubara gave political appointments to Wike’s supporters, but the peace did not last.

As the crisis worsened, Tinubu in March declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending the Governor, his deputy Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all elected lawmakers. He then appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the Administrator to run the oil-rich state.
