Universal Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for "Wicked: For Good," the highly anticipated sequel to the 2024 blockbuster "Wicked." Scheduled to hit theaters on November 21, 2025, the film continues the epic story of Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, portrayed by Ariana Grande. The new trailer, which debuted on June 4, 2025, offers fans a tantalizing glimpse into the concluding chapter of the Oz saga, directed by Jon M. Chu.
"Wicked: For Good" picks up directly after the events of the first film, which saw Elphaba declare herself against the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and flee the Land of Oz, now branded the "Wicked Witch of the West" and an enemy of the state. Glinda, meanwhile, has become a glamorous public figure and spokesperson for Oz, operating under the influence of the Wizard and Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). The two former friends find themselves on opposing sides, navigating the consequences of their choices from the first movie.
Despite their estrangement, the trailer emphasizes the enduring bond between Elphaba and Glinda, highlighting it as the fulcrum of their futures. "You're the only friend I ever had," Elphaba tearfully tells Glinda in one scene, with Glinda replying, "The only one that mattered." Complicating matters further is Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), Glinda's handsome boyfriend and possibly soon-to-be husband, who now appears to head the Wizard's guard tasked with hunting down Elphaba. However, Fiyero's loyalties seem divided, as he is also shown turning a gun on the Wizard.
The sequel will also introduce Dorothy (Alisha Weir) and her iconic friends to the narrative, with glimpses of them on the yellow brick road. The trailer showcases the growing hysteria surrounding Elphaba and her villainization, fueled by Madam Morrible's denunciations and villagers wielding pitchforks. Elphaba is seen practicing her magic using the Grimmerie, determined to expose the truth about the Wizard and fight for the freedom of Oz’s silenced Animals.
Musically, "Wicked: For Good" will feature beloved Act Two show-stoppers from the stage musical, including Elphaba's power ballad "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished," the Elphaba-Fiyero duet "As Long as You’re Mine," and the moving Elphaba-Glinda duet "For Good," which lends its name to the sequel. Additionally, the film will introduce two brand new songs, composed by Stephen Schwartz, one for Elphaba and one for Glinda. Cynthia Erivo described her new song as "so special" and emotionally resonant, while Ariana Grande noted her new song occurs at a "pivotal moment" for Glinda, revealing a new side to her character.
Director Jon M. Chu has stated that "Wicked: For Good" will delve into the consequences of the characters' choices, resulting in a heavier and more soul-searching narrative compared to its predecessor. "If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences," Chu explained, adding that "the temperature is up." Marissa Bode, who plays Nessarose, also teased that the sequel is "definitely a lot darker." Chu aims for the two films to feel like one complete epic, bringing the story full circle.
The decision to adapt the popular Broadway musical (itself based on Gregory Maguire's novel) into two films was made to explore the story and characters with greater depth without cutting any songs, according to screenwriter Winnie Holzman. The two movies were filmed simultaneously, with production concluding in January 2024. The first film, "Wicked," was a significant critical and commercial success in 2024, making history as the highest-grossing movie musical of all time, being the highest-grossing movie of 2024 in the UK, and earning 10 Oscar nominations, winning two for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
With its powerful themes of friendship, choices, and consequences, and the promise of a dramatic conclusion to the untold story of the witches of Oz, "Wicked: For Good" is poised to be a major cinematic event when it arrives in theaters. The new trailer underscores the emotional depth and visual spectacle that audiences can expect from this final chapter.
