Published 17 hours ago3 minute read

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, on Friday, finally decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) at an event held with media restriction in Uyo, saying he took the decision to provide support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who is from the state, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The event was witnessed by the Senate President, represented by his wife, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio; Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo state, Hope Uzodinma, and his Cross River State counterpart, Governor Bassey Otu.

It was gathered that in solidarity with the governor, some local council chairpersons, members of the state executive council, and National Assembly members from the state present at the event, all declared that they would move to the APC from the PDP with the governor.

Speaking at the event, Eno said he finally decided to join the APC after consultations with all stakeholders in the state.

The Akwa Ibom governor said he had last Thursday submitted his letter of resignation from the PDP to his ward.

He added that he had also sent letters of his resignation to the state and national executive of PDP.

“I have decided to progressively move to APC after concluding the consultations. I have today changed my political affiliation, but I will continue to hold on to my moral values,” the governor said while promising that he would work to unite the party in the state.

He also declared that he would support the president in the 2027 election so that the president would be re-elected to complete his reforms.

He stressed that political parties remain vehicles for elections, but he would continue to ensure that governance is done through the prism of bipartisanship.

Meanwhile, the commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, Dr Ini Emeobong, has resigned his appointment over the development.

In his letter of resignation, Emeobong, who was at one time the spokesperson of PDP in the state, noted that despite his closeness to the governor, his long aversion to APC makes him unwilling to join the federal ruling party.

He, however, noted that “this decision does not affect my personal relationship with the governor, who calls me his brother and reposed great confidence in me by saddling me with two very important ministries- Information and Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port.”

Describing his exit from the State Executive Council as another bend, Emeobong, assured that he would do his utmost best to sustain his tremendous respect for the governor, even out of EXCO.
