The 28-year-old was coming off arguably the best few weeks of his life. He had helped Liverpool lift their 20th English title and married his best friend in a colourful wedding.

The football world, his teammates, coaches, and family are struggling to come to terms with his sudden death.

"What to say? What can anyone say at a time like this when the shock and the pain is so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words but I know I do not," Liverpool coach Arne Slot said.
"For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us," Slot added.

Tributes have been pouring in, with Lionel Messi, LeBron James, Kylian Mbappé and other sports stars paying respects to the striker.

According to CNN via Daily Mail, Jota's funeral process is set to begin on Friday, July 4, a day after his death. His funeral service is set for Saturday, July 5.

Sadly, it will be in the same location where he and his wife, Rute Cardoso, exchanged their vows a fortnight ago.

Jose Manuel Macedo, a local clergyman, said a full Catholic service will start at 10am.

"The bodies of the brothers will arrive at the resurrection chapel for the wake which will take place tomorrow and then the funeral will be at 10 am on Saturday. We're available to celebrate [their life] with everyone and to share the pain and the Christian hope."

In Portugal, it is common for the funeral to take place 48 hours after a death. It is not clear if all his teammates from Liverpool will attend.

Liverpool said they will immortalise Jota's No.20 for his contributions to Liverpool's 20th English title in 2024/25.

Christiano Ronaldo joined other footballers and fans in paying tribute to Jota and his brother.

The Al-Nassr veteran said it doesn't make sense that his teammate died after just having his wedding.

“It doesn't make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, and now you had got married," he wrote on Instagram.

In a related story, reported that doctors gave Jota a warning before the car crash that took his life.

Reports indicate doctors told him not to fly since he had undergone a lung-related surgery.

Jota's Lamborghini veered off the road after a tire blowout and caught fire, which resulted in Jota and his brother's deaths.
