In a rare move by the Academy, none of the five nominees for Best Original Song—"The Journey" from The Six Triple Eight, "Mi Camino" from Emilia Pérez, "Like a Bird" from Sing Sing, "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez, and "Never Too Late" from Elton John: Never Too Late—will be performed during tonight’s ceremony. This means potential performances from artists like Elton John, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, H.E.R., and Diane Warren likely won’t be part of the show. Instead, the show’s producers will focus on “celebrating the filmmaking community and some of its legends,” according to a press release.

Wicked co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are expected to open the ceremony tonight with a medley from their hit movie musical, though the exact details remain under wraps. The film, directed by Jon M. Chu, is nominated for 10 Academy awards, including Best Picture, Original Score, Best Actress for Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Grande.

“Wicked is an undeniable smash,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ CEO Bill Kramer told CNN ahead of the event. “Cynthia and Ariana are such incredible performers. We are so thrilled that they’ll be on the show this year as performers, and I think all fans of ‘Wicked’ and beyond will love what they have planned.”

The Academy also confirmed that Doja Cat, Raye, and Blackpink’s Lisa will take the stage for what’s being teased as “a showstopping celebration of cinema.” While the trio recently released their new single "Born Again" last week, the Academy clarified that this won’t be the song they perform on Sunday night.

Doja Cat spent most of 2024 touring and promoting her 2023 album Scarlet. Blackpink breakout star Lalisa "Lisa" Manobal is hot off her new solo album, Alter Ego, and recently made her solo acting debut in The White Lotus Season 3. Meanwhile, London-born singer Raye was nominated for two Grammys last month after releasing her hit 2023 debut album, My 21st Century Blues.

Queen Latifah, the award-winning actress and singer, will take the stage for a musical tribute honoring Quincy Jones, the legendary record producer and seven-time Oscar nominee who passed away in November. While she hasn’t appeared in a film since Netflix’s Hustle in 2022, Latifah earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Matron "Mama" Morton in Chicago (2002).

There will also be a James Bond music tribute honoring longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, Variety reported. The performance will supposedly include iconic songs from the James Bond franchise, although it’s unknown whether it will focus only on Oscar-winning and nominated songs. Sources told Variety that the tribute will include what is being described as "an assembly of surprising and immense talents.”

The 97th annual Academy Awards will also include a special appearance by the Grammy-winning Los Angeles Master Chorale. Led by Grant Gershon, the Los Angeles-based chorus group has been praised as “the finest-by-far major chorus in America” by the Los Angeles Times, according to its website.
