If we could hop in the time machine and go back to the 2007 NFL draft, who would the Indianapolis Colts end up taking?
Max Chadwick, Dalton Wasserman, and Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus recently completed this exercise, and instead of picking wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez out of Ohio State, the PFF trio had the Colts address the same position, but go in a different direction.
In this draft, the Colts were coming off their Super Bowl win, and with that held the 32nd overall selection. In this redraft, that pick was used on San Jose State wide receiver James Jones, who originally went to Green Bay in the third round.
"Anthony Gonzalez’s career was cut short due to injury," wrote PFF. "Instead, we’ll go with James Jones, who was a reliable option for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in eight of his nine NFL seasons. He led all players in receiving touchdowns in 2012 and posted a career high in receiving yards in his final season in 2015."
Jones would spend eight of his nine NFL seasons in Green Bay and won a Super Bowl with them. For his career, Jones caught 61% of his targets at 13.5 yards per catch with 51 touchdowns.
Jones had two seasons where he eclipsed 800 receiving yards and five others where he went over 600. During the 2012 season, he would lead the NFL in receiving touchdowns with 14.
Gonzalez would play five seasons with the Colts and appeared in 40 games, including just 11 during his final three seasons. He totaled 1,307 career yards at 13.2 yards per catch with seven touchdowns.
