’ fate continues to be tied to the court and her court-appointed guardian amid her, and it’s breaking her family’s heart as they demand more access to the troubled lady and make noise about the unfairness of it all, a source exclusively tells In Touch.
“Wendy’s under strict guardianship with little contact with the outside world and her relatives are fretting over what they can do to change things,” the insider says. “They’re getting louder in their opposition and challenging the rules.”
Wendy, 60, the iconic host of The Wendy Williams Show, was diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia stemming from alcohol-related brain damage after a stint in rehab in 2019. The neurologist gave the news to her family members, as she was considered incapacitated at the time.
The veteran T.V. host was placed under the guardianship in question in 2022. A court filing made by attorneys for , the appointed guardian, in a legal battle to stop Lifetime from releasing the documentary, Where Is Wendy Williams?, states the New Jersey native, “has been afflicted by early-onset dementia and, as a result, has become cognitively impaired and permanently incapacitated.”
“In January 2022, after becoming aware of a pattern of disturbing events concerning [Wendy’s] welfare and finances, Wells Fargo took the highly unusual step of initiating a guardianship proceeding on its own initiative in the Supreme Court of New York, New York County, to seek the court appointment of an independent guardian for [Wendy’s] financial affairs,” the court admission reads.
Being placed under guardianship by a bank is certainly strange, and now Wendy’s family is demanding more clarity and access to their loved one, especially as videos surface of fans interacting with her in a seemingly normal way.
“They want to see more of Wendy and be able to check on her, spend time with her, take her out for an ice cream or shopping and it’s hurting them that they’re being denied the decency to see for themselves what’s happening to Wendy,” the source says.
Wendy’s ex-husband, , is embroiled in a fight with Wendy’s guardian over divorce payouts he feels he’s entitled to. Wells Fargo froze all of Wendy’s accounts after she was placed under the guardianship, which ceased the payouts.
The family hasn’t been completely cut off from Wendy, however. Wheelchair bound, Wendy was spotted at her son ’s college graduation alongside her father and sister in a rare public outing. Kevin, 24, took time off school in 2021 and 2022 to help care for his ailing mother, before she was placed in the guardianship. Wendy was also spotted and recorded by fans while sitting inside of an SUV, returning the greeting they gave her and smiling. Though it appears recent, the exact date the video was taken is unclear.
“There’s a strong sense of guilt within the family that it’s gotten this bad and they want to be able to do more for her,” the insider adds. “Their hands are tied until the court decides to change things, but they’re praying that it will happen sooner rather than later.”
“Dementia is a killer and Wendy may not have much time left.”
