Olanrewaju's fight against John Mbanugu was an undercard bout in the Bel 7-Star Energy drink Professional Boxing League in Accra, Ghana.

He was medically cleared to fight but in the third round, tragedy struck. He fell onto the canvas prompting the referee to start his countdown.

Referee Richard Amevi stopped the fight and ringside medics swiftly came to check on him. They provided emergency care and took him to Korle Bu hospital, where he was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arrival, per GBC Online.

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) later confirmed his death in an official statement.

The general secretary of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Remi Aboderin, described the late Olanrewaju as "fearless."

"We are really devastated," Aboderin told BBC Sport Africa.
"[This] is not something we envisaged. We will live up to our responsibility and make sure that we stand [by] the family."

Before high clash with Mbanugu, he had competed in 23 fights, with 13 victories and eight defeats

His most recent fight before facing Mbanugu was a defeat against Idowu Raheed in December in Lagos.

“Oluwasegun was declared medically fit by the Nigeria Boxing Board Control with his certification as a professional boxer before the GBA sanctioned and approved the international contest,” a GBA statement read, per My Joy Online.

In his post-match interview, Mbanugu was glad to have won the fight but hoped his opponent was well.

"I'm excited [I won the fight], but I'm hoping and praying he gets well," he said.
"I was throwing [punches], but along the way, I don't know. But I think there's something wrong somewhere," he added

The cause of Olanrewaju's death is yet to be determined.

According to sports journalist Samuel Bartels the bout was scheduled for Friday, March 28, but it was cancelled leaving Olanrewaju stranded in Ghana.

In January, Gorimbo was choked out in 52 seconds by Vicente Luque at UFC 310 in humiliating fashion.

The fighter, who went viral for linking up with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, said some of his relatives celebrated his defeat.
