Wanyonyi stuns bigwigs at Grand Slam Track in Jamaica
In a stunning display of athleticism, Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi triumphed in the 1500m race at the Grand Slam Track meet in Kingston, Jamaica, marking a significant achievement in his burgeoning career. The victory saw him outperform formidable opponents, including Yared Nuguse of the United States and Canadian Marco Arop.
Wanyonyi's tactical prowess was evident as he navigated the race, positioning himself strategically before unleashing a powerful kick in the homestretch. This move secured him first place with a time of 3:35.18. His win is particularly noteworthy as it came against specialists in the 1500m discipline, adding to the impressiveness of his performance.
The 20-year-old's success in Kingston follows his victory in the 1500m race at the Athletics Kenya track and field event in Kapsabet, fueling speculation about his potential participation in the Tokyo World Championships. Nuguse finished second with 3:35.36, while Cole Hocker clocked 3:35.52. Reigning world 1500m champion Josh Kerr finished fifth in 3:35.61
Wanyonyi's victory earned him 12 points, and a win in the 800m would secure him a top prize. In the women's division, Diribe Weltiji emerged as the overall winner in the short distances, claiming the top prize money.
Meanwhile, Mary Moraa, the world 800m champion, had to withdraw from the Kingston leg due to illness, disappointing fans who anticipated her performance. Moraa expressed her gratitude to the event organizers and her hopes to recover for the Miami Slam in May.
The Grand Slam Track series will crown a 'Racer of the Year' in each race group based on accumulated points across the four meets, adding further excitement to the competition.
