Cattle Thieves Escape Angry Mob in Siaya as Lorry Torched

In Usire sub-location, Bondo sub-county, residents took decisive action following a surge in cattle theft, highlighting growing frustration with local law enforcement. The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 8th, after thieves made off with seven cows from various homesteads, triggering an immediate and forceful response from the community.
The thieves' attempt to transport the stolen livestock was thwarted when their lorry, registration number KCR 822R, became mired in mud near the Oseno area. Alerted to the theft, residents quickly mobilized, ambushing the vehicle and causing the suspects to flee. However, the driver, identified as 39-year-old Amos Odhiambo, was apprehended and assaulted by the enraged crowd before police intervention.
Maranda Police Post officers arrived to rescue Odhiambo, taking him into custody for questioning. Meanwhile, the residents, fueled by anger and a desire to prevent future thefts, set the lorry ablaze after recovering the stolen cattle. One resident stated, "We did that so that those thieves do not return and steal our cows," underscoring the community's determination to protect their livelihoods.
Currently, Amos Odhiambo is being held at Bondo Police Station as the primary suspect in what authorities believe is a larger regional cattle theft operation. The incident has brought to the forefront deeper concerns about rising insecurity in the area.
Resident Frank Owino voiced the community's frustration, stating, “People have been complaining about increased insecurity, whereby several families have been losing their livestock to cattle thieves unknown to us and we would like the government to intervene. We are angry because these people keep on stealing from us and the police have done nothing to curb their actions.” He also criticized the perceived slow response of law enforcement, noting that police arrived late and focused primarily on rescuing the driver rather than immediately recovering the stolen livestock.
The incident reflects a community at its wit's end, resorting to extreme measures in the face of perceived inaction by authorities and persistent criminal activity.
