Viewers say George Clooney's play is 'wildly relevant' to today's political climate - NewsBreak

Viewers made comparisons to the events of George Clooney's play Good Night, and Good Luck to President Donald Trump's administration.

The Tony-nominated play starring the actor as CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow had its penultimate show on Saturday, June 7 at the Winter Garden Theatre and was televised on CNN. According to the network, this is the first time a Broadway show has ever been broadcast live. Good Night, and Good Luck is a stage adaptation of the 2005 film of the same name which George directed, co-wrote with Grant Heslov and starred in as news producer Fred W. Friendly. George and Grant also co-wrote the stage adaptation and David Cromer directed it.

The play is nominated for five Tonys and has smashed another record by becoming the highest-grossing play in Broadway history. It is also the first play to rake $4 million in a single week. The synopsis of Good Night, and Good Luck is Edward R. Murrow and his CBS team working to expose Senator Joseph McCarthy's unjust actions with his campaign to remove communists in America.

Viewers who watched the broadcast live, spoke about how the show was important and spoke to the what's currently happening under Trump.

A person wrote on X formerly Twitter: "You need to stop whatever you are doing and watch :Good Night and Good Luck right now. So much of this dialogue perfectly ensconce the current Trump administration." A second person said: "It is WILD how relevant 'Good Night & Good Luck' is, right now & this week. Just wow. Airing live on CNN! Hope it stiffens some spines."

Another said: "Watching CNN playing 'Good Night, Good Luck' right now. Take note America — this is going on again right now in this country. The new McCarthyism is well and alive today. Be very vigilant.

A fourth person remarked, "Praise for [sic] Geo Cloney's 'Good Night and God Luck' It's not a stretch to relate Joe McCarthy to Trump. Both attack the opposition with unfounded claims meant solely to intimidate and smear."

In an CNN special interview ahead of the televised show, George spoke with Anderson Cooper about the play in which he said that today's politics in the United Stares are "worse" than McCarthyism.

The 64-year-old explained, referring to Trump's policies that have targeted law firms, universities and unlawfully detained students, "Although McCarthyism was bad, it wasn’t anywhere near as pervasive as it is right now. The kind of fear that you see kind of stretching through law firms and universities."

George continued to say how this play relates to the current climate and how it has a hopeful message to take from it.

"What’s fun about doing the play is it reminds people that, you know, that we have been through difficult times, challenging times," he said. "And that we survive it as a country. And we do find our better angels along the way. It takes a minute… We always do and we always have."
