In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Charles Yomekpe, the New Force described the incident as “deeply saddening and disturbing,” noting that the supporter had only attempted to speak with the candidate.
“The individual in question was unarmed, posed no threat, and deserved nothing but dignity and respect,” the statement said.
The movement issued what it called its “sincerest apologies” to the victim and his family, as well as to Ghanaians who, it said, rightfully expect higher standards of conduct from its representatives.
“No individual, supporter or otherwise, should ever be subjected to violence, especially in a democratic environment where engagement and expression are to be protected,” it added.
Mr Yomekpe stressed that the behaviour captured in the video does not reflect the values of the movement and confirmed that internal disciplinary processes had been initiated. “Let it be made unequivocally clear that our movement strongly condemns this behaviour. It is unacceptable, unjustifiable, and entirely out of line with the values we hold,” the statement read.
The group further assured the public that the individual responsible for the assault will be held fully accountable in line with the law and internal procedures. It said the investigation into the matter is ongoing and pledged transparency throughout the process.
In the wake of the incident, the New Force has promised to rebuild public trust, committing to measures that will prevent similar misconduct. “We are committed to restoring public confidence by ensuring that such behaviour is never repeated,” Mr Yomekpe noted. He also thanked the public for drawing attention to the matter and for “holding us to the highest standard.”
As of now, there has been no personal comment from Mr Bediako on the matter.
