With a Federal election set to take place on April 28, 2025, Canadian politicians have now vowed to protect the country’s automotive and manufacturing industries from ongoing tariff threats.
Notably, on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the Liberal government will create a $2 billion dollar fund to boost the country’s automotive sector if re-elected.
In a televised press conference in Windsor, Ont., Carney specifically commented that his government would work with industry actors to manufacture more vehicle parts in Canada, while also limiting the number of parts crossing into the United States during production.
The projected fund would also aim to protect workers in the industry affected by tariffs, concluded Carney.
Comparatively, the Honourable Pierre Poilievre, leader of Conservative party and the official opposition, also affirmed that he, if elected, would work to “bring home Canadian jobs.”
According to the Canadian Conservative’s website, Poilievre reportedly supports “matching American tariffs on Chinese-produced electric vehicles and EV components.”
