UTRECHT | THE FULL TRAVEL GUIDE

Published 18 hours ago6 minute read

Because it offers the perfect blend of history, culture, and local charm – all within a walkable city center. We’ve been living in Utrecht for over 20 years, and although Elke and Sarah have left, our editor Eline still lives there. She might be a bit biased because she lives in Utrecht, but we can honestly say it is one the best cities in The Netherlands. From climbing the tallest church tower in the Netherlands (the Dom Tower) to relaxing along unique canals with waterside terraces or visit one of the many museums, Utrecht gives you an authentic Dutch experience without the tourist crowds. Utrecht is however, gaining popularity and being discovered by tourists, so don’t wait and visit now!

Utrecht Central Station

Because it’s convenient location in the middle of The Netherlands, Utrecht is very well-connected from anywhere of the country. In fact, it’s home to the largest and busiest train station in the Netherlands! Although Utrecht does not have an airport itself, if you’re flying to Amsterdam, it is only a 30-minute ride away from Schiphol Airport. Utrecht is also well-connected to other airports in the country by train, such as Eindhoven or Rotterdam. Once you’re in Utrecht, it is easy to get around: the city center is best explored by foot or by bike. If you wish to explore further areas public transport (bus and tram) is also very easy to use.

Whether you’re in town for a day or a week, there’s plenty to keep you busy. From must-see landmarks to local favorites, here’s a selection of the top things to see, try, and experience while you’re in Utrecht.

The number one thing to do in Utrecht, is to climb the tallest church tower of The Netherland: . The Dom Tower has been restored over the past five (!) years and, since the end of 2024, can once again be admired in all its glory. The 465 steps reward you with a stunning panoramic view over the city and surrounding countryside. But don’t forget to visit : an underground archaeological museum that takes visitors beneath the Dom Square to explore 2,000 years of history, from Roman times to the present.

Right next to the Dom Tower, on the Dom Square, is the impressive , a beautiful Gothic building. Other notable churches in Utrecht well worth a visit include the , , and , each offering a glimpse into Utrecht’s historic and religious heritage.

The center of Utrecht is filled with little ‘hofjes’: small, tucked away courtyards and gardens that offer peaceful retreats amidst the bustling city center. To give you a few examples: don’t miss , , and . But don’t forget to go explore and discover some more ‘hofjes’ yourself. How many can you find?

Everybody’s favorite activity: a stroll along the Utrecht canals. Utrecht’s canals are unlike any other in the Netherlands. The canals include two-level of wharves with cellar cafés, boutiques, and terraces. You can walk or sit right at the water side, whether you have your take away coffee with you or you’re enjoying a nice meal on a terrace. The canals offer a perfect way to take in the city’s charm. : get there early, before the shops open, to avoid the crowds!

If you’re not done strolling after exploring the canals in the city center, take a relaxed walk along the Singel — the circular canal that wraps around the heart of Utrecht. The full loop is about 5 to 6 kilometers. Just follow the water along a lush, green path. It’s probably my favorite thing to do in the city: perfect for getting in your 10k steps, and thanks to all the greenery, it hardly feels like you’re in the middle of a city at all.

If you like to visit a museum, Utrecht offers plenty of choice. Here are some of the fascinating museums:
