USAID: List of Kenyan Institutions affected by US funding freeze, amount received in 2024

In less than a month into office, Trump issued orders that froze all foreign aid conducted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Although Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a waiver allowing lifesaving humanitarian aid to resume, the USAID fund freeze continued to hit most countries across the globe.
The organisation directed all workers across the world to go on administrative leave.
"On Friday, February 7, 2025, at 11:59 pm (EST) all USAID direct hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and specially designated programs," said USAID.
The move instilled fear and anguish among dependent institutions which took steps to restructure over an imminent reduction in donations.
The US foreign fund disbursed KSh 84 billion to more than 230 institutions in Kenya during the year ending December 2024.
Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza government received KSh 602 million from USAID during the same period.
The University of Nairobi received KSh 1.2 billion, Moi University (589 million), among other organisations and notable government institutions.

Other organisations that support humanitarian activities in Kenya are World Food Programme which received KSh 15.6 billion, Food and Agriculture Organisation (KSh 113 million), Kenya Red Cross Society (KSh 1.1 billion) and Mercy Corps (KSh 1.4 billion.
