Unseasonal showers disrupt life & damage crops in Nashik district | Nashik News - The Times of India
Nashik: Heavy unseasonal rain lashed parts of Nashik city and district throwing the life out of gear on Wednesday evening. Nashik city received 5mm of rainfall in the 12 hours ending 8.30pm on Wednesday.
"An orange alert had been issued for Tuesday, but there was no rain on that day. However, on Wednesday, the rain started in the evening. We were caught off guard and got soaked in the rain that lasted for about 45 minutes," said Ramesh Patil, a resident of Cidco.
The rain lashed parts of Nashik Road, Indiranagar, Cidco, Gangapur Road, and Panchavati. Tree branches fell on power lines, causing power failures and disruptions for several hours. In the rural areas, the showers affected farmers and the lightning strikes killed two head of cattle.
The unseasonal rain wreaked havoc in the Sinnar taluka on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to onion, potato, cabbage, wheat, and flower crops. The Vinchur Dalvi area also got hail. In Dindori taluka, onion, grape, wheat, gram, and mango crops were affected.
Satana town and surrounding areas received the rain for the second consecutive day, where onion, wheat, and gram were hit. "The assessment of crop loss will be carried out over the next couple of days," an officer of the district administration said.
"Farmers were hoping to get good prices for their produce. Onion crops in the area were looking strong. However, the unseasonal showers have destroyed the summer onion that is harvested or is about to be harvested. Farmers and onion growers are devastated," said Shantaram Gunjal, an onion farmer from Satana.
In its forecast for Thursday, IMD warned of light rain or thundershowers in one or two places in Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, and Nashik districts of the Nashik division. A yellow alert has been sounded in the Ahilyanagar district.
