The most surprising game was another loss of top-ranked Lions (21-7) in Guildford on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by eighth ranked Scorchers (11-16)
88-80. Surrey made 22-of-24 free shots (91.7 percent) during the game. Strangely London outrebounded Surrey 47-30 including a 24-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. Surrey looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American guard Jalen Ray (188-1999, college: Hofstra) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points and 7 assists. His fellow American import forward Dame Adelekun (203-2001, college: Loyola, IL) contributed with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners. Scorchers' coach Lloyd Gardner used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American point guard Tu Holloway (183-1989, college: Xavier) answered with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for London. Surrey moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Newcastle E. London lost third consecutive game. Defending champion still keeps top position with seven games lost. Surrey is looking forward to face Newcastle E. (#7) at home in the next round. London will play against the league's second-placed Leicester R. (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.An interesting game for Leicester Riders (19-8) which hosted in Leicester 3rd placed Sharks (19-9). Second ranked Leicester Riders managed to get a 5-point victory 100-95. It was a great evening for American guard Zach Jackson (198-1997, college: Omaha) who led his team to a victory scoring 28 points and 5 assists. Riley Abercrombie helped adding 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. American forward Jacob Groves (206-1999, college: Virginia) responded with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Sharks' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Leicester R. maintains second place with 19-8 record having just three points less than leader London L. Sheffield at the other side keeps the third position with nine games lost. Leicester R. will play against league's leader London at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Sheffield will play against Caledonia in Glasgow and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in Newcastle supposed to be also quite interesting. Fourth ranked Manchester (14-14) played at the court of 6th ranked Newcastle Eagles (11-16). Manchester smashed Newcastle Eagles 100-69 on Friday. It was an exceptional evening for Makai Ashton-Langford who led the winners and scored 18 points and 4 assists. Manchester's coach Herman Mandole felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Mike Okauru came up with 21 points for Newcastle E. in the defeat. Manchester have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain fourth place with 14-14 record. Newcastle E. lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with 16 games lost. They share it with Surrey. Manchester will meet at home Bristol Flyers (#8) in the next round. Newcastle E. will play against Surrey in Guildford and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
There were no big surprises in other games of round 23: bottom-ranked Caledonia was smashed by Bristol Flyers on the road 81-62. Manchester won against Cheshire P. on its own court 99-86. Leicester R. managed to outperform Cheshire P. in a road game 91-78. Bristol Flyers recorded a loss to Surrey at home 73-82. Newcastle E. was defeated by Sheffield on the opponent's court 90-79.
