Underperformance: Oborevwori reads the riot act to Delta commissioners

Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday issued a stern warning to members of the State Executive Council to be up to their duties to avoid being sacked.

Speaking during the commissioning of eight newly built duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori declared that only performance, not gossip or rumour-mongering, will guarantee their continued stay in office.

“I want to commend our commissioners for being loyal, dedicated, and hardworking. But you know, there are a lot of rumours saying the governor wants to dissolve the exco. These people haven’t even heard from me; this just shows that people like to talk too much.”

Oborevwori clarified that while there is no immediate plan to dissolve the Executive Council, individual performance would be the determining factor for continued tenure in office.

“If you are not performing, we will drop you, and that will not affect other people,” he said. “If you are performing, you will stay. Like now, two or three people are not performing. I told one of them today at the chapel, ‘you are not doing well.’”

The governor stressed the need for visibility, initiative, and proactive governance from each commissioner.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to accountability, insisting that each commissioner would be held responsible for the success or failure of their ministry.

Oborevwori also announced a plan to streamline the commissioning of state projects, citing President Bola Tinubu’s recent example of commissioning multiple projects from a single location.

“We want to emulate Mr. President. That is exactly what we will do in Warri on Wednesday. Since we have several projects to commission, we will articulate them, put them together, and stay in one place to cut the tape and commission all of them.”

Speaking at the event, Dean of Commissioners and Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, thanked the governor for the new buildings and appealed for the renovation of the 22 existing quarters.
