UKZN and Youtility Partner to Launch AI-Driven Green Energy System for South Africa - iAfrica.com

In a landmark move to reshape South Africa’s energy future, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has entered a joint venture with Hong Kong-based tech firm Youtility to deploy AI-driven, renewable energy systems across its campuses.

The initiative, launched at UKZN’s Westville campus, will use Youtility’s AI operating system, Wizdom, to manage power from over 2,000 solar panels and battery storage units. Each campus will eventually operate as an energy-resilient microgrid, capable of running independently during national grid failures.

“This is a defining moment,” said Professor Anil Chuturgoon, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation. “It addresses our energy crisis while creating an academic blueprint for green transformation.”

Professor Leigh Jarvis, director of UKZN’s Eskom Power Engineering Program, emphasized the importance of decentralised energy systems and smart infrastructure. “This is about building resilience and creating real-world innovation opportunities for students,” he said.

The partnership will also support academic research, hands-on student training, and potential spin-off ventures, aligning with UKZN’s ambition to become South Africa’s first predominantly renewable university.

Youtility Director Wayne Mostert likened the disruption to how Netflix revolutionised entertainment: “We’re using data and decentralisation to reimagine utilities.”

Beyond clean energy generation, the project introduces blockchain-based real-time billing, promoting transparency and reducing electricity theft. It is also expected to lower operational costs and enhance energy equity.

Eskom Distribution has expressed early interest in the model, which could inform broader national energy policies.

“This is not just about UKZN,” added Jarvis. “It’s a model for towns, cities, and institutions across South Africa to follow.”
