On 2nd May 2025, the University of Ghana Business School paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Dr. Abiba Zakariah and Mr. Bernard Ohemeng-Baah, alumni of UGBS, at the NIC premises. The school leadership and the alumni association of UGBS congratulated them on their appointment and mobilised support for the school. Mr. Emmanuel Poku-Sarkodie, UGBS School Administrator, congratulated Dr. Zakariah and Mr. Ohemeng-Baah on their recent appointment and added that the school takes pride in their accomplishment.

Mr. Ohemeng-Baah revealed plans to establish fully operational insurance companies on university campuses to give students practical exposure to the insurance sector and bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice. "We are going to establish full companies on campuses so that students get to experience how insurance companies are run," the Deputy Commissioner said. He explained that this initiative would be funded by contributions from insurance companies across the country.

According to Mr. Ohemeng-Baah, students with various academic backgrounds will be employed in diverse roles across the company structure and will receive remuneration for their work. Also, he mentioned that external supervisors and industry professionals will be brought in to mentor and oversee operations.

In addition to setting up these student-led insurance companies, Mr. Ohemeng-Baah shared that the NIC has already engaged the Insurance Student Association to develop templates that will enable students to design insurance products to promote innovation in the insurance sector. He added, "We want students to begin developing real products and working with data. We want them to see how insurance can help real communities." Mr. Ohemeng-Baah noted that this hands-on model would offer students a deeper understanding of insurance operations while equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to succeed after graduation. Mr. Ohemeng-Baah also highlighted plans to create internship platforms where students can work remotely on real projects, receive feedback from industry experts, and build professional portfolios even while still in school.

Mr. David Okyere Nyarkoh, President of the Alumni Association, discussed a thought leadership initiative by the Alumni Association and invited alumni to share their career experiences and interact with students. Dr. Zakariah thanked the school leadership and the alumni association for their support and was grateful to partner on these initiatives. She also sought suggestions from UGBS to promote innovation and inclusive insurance across sectors in Ghana.
