The UCLA men’s basketball program has hired David Singleton as an assistant coach, as announced on Wednesday by Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Men’s Head Basketball Coach.

Singleton spent the past two seasons playing in the NBA G League with the Atlanta Hawks’ affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks (located in College Park, Ga.). A 6-foot-4 guard, Singleton played for UCLA through five seasons, enrolling as a freshman in 2018 after a strong four-year high school career at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, Calif.

During his five-year career with UCLA, Singleton helped the Bruins advance to the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons (2021, 2022, 2023) including a remarkable run from the tournament’s First Four to the Final Four in 2021. As a fifth-year senior in 2022-23, Singleton led UCLA to the Pac-12 regular-season title and the Bruins’ third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.

“I’ve always said that David has a lot of the traits and intangible qualities that come with being a coach and teacher,” Cronin said. “It’s obvious that David loves UCLA. Coaching him through his last four years here, I saw him develop into a selfless teammate who always put in the work. He’s always had his eye on becoming a coach, and we are thrilled that we can add him to our staff. He understands what it takes to get a team to perform at a high level. He’s stepping into a new role with us, and he will have the ability to make an imprint on our program in a different way. I am confident in his abilities, leadership and room for growth. Anyone who watched him play in Pauley Pavilion saw his dedication and passion. David is a Bruin, through and through, and I know he’s excited to get to work this summer.”

Singleton established UCLA’s career record for most games played (164), taking advantage of one extra year of eligibility afforded to student-athletes who saw their 2020-21 season interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through five years in Westwood, Singleton averaged 5.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He concluded his college career ranking No. 5 on UCLA’s career 3-point percentage list (43.4%) and No. 9 on the Pac-12’s career 3-point percentage record list. Singleton continues to rank No. 3 on UCLA’s career list for most 3-pointers made (219), behind Bryce Alford (329) and Jason Kapono (317). He had a career assist-turnover ratio of 2.4-to-1, with 154 assists and 63 turnovers.

“I’m very grateful to Coach Cronin and to UCLA for this opportunity to return to my alma mater and contribute to the program,” Singleton said. “My time here as a student-athlete was extremely special, and I’m looking forward to adding to the legacy and program in any way that I can as an assistant coach.”

Through five seasons at UCLA, Singleton’s teams compiled a total record of 116 wins and 52 losses (winning percentage of 69.0). Through his final three years, the Bruins went 80-24 with a record of 9-3 in the NCAA Tournament.

As a fifth-year senior in 2022-23, Singleton played in all 37 games and made 16 starts as UCLA compiled a 31-6 overall record. He averaged 9.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 28.2 minutes per game, shooting a team-best 42.4 percent from 3-point range (73-for-172). That season, he ranked No. 3 in the Pac-12 in 3-point field goal percentage (42.4) and led UCLA with 73 shots made from 3-point range. In fact, Singleton’s 73 triples that year were the most by any UCLA player since Aaron Holiday made 88 during his junior season in 2017-18.
