Trump Says US Held Positive Weekend Talks With Iran
US President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed optimism over ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran, revealing that recent talks between US and Iranian officials were “very good” as Washington seeks a deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Speaking to reporters at Morristown Airport in New Jersey before returning to Washington, Trump said, “I think we could have some good news on the Iran front.” He had spent the weekend at his Bedminster golf club.
While Trump did not disclose specific details, he confirmed that the discussions took place in Rome between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and an Iranian delegation. He suggested that “serious progress” had been made, though he cautioned that outcomes were not yet certain.
“I don’t know if I’ll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good,” he added.
The talks mark a potential turning point in diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, an issue that has long been a point of contention between Tehran and the West. If successful, the negotiations could pave the way for a fresh agreement or a revival of diplomatic channels previously strained under past administrations.
No immediate response has been issued by Iranian officials regarding the reported discussions.
