'Tron: Ares' Footage Unveiled at CinemaCon With Jared Leto

Covering Caesars Colosseum in an amazing laser light show, Disney unveiled a new teaser at CinemaCon today for Tron: Ares, the latest installment in the 43-year video game movie franchise. Slated for an October 10 theatrical release, the movie is directed by Joachim Rønning.

Jared Leto fanned out onstage with Jeff Bridges next to him: “As a kid I was obsessed with Tron. The future felt it was right around the corner,” Leto said. “It had everything I wanted from a movie — action, adventure and spandex — it took me to a world that I never knew.”

“This movie will hit you right in the grid,” said the House of Gucci star and Dallas Buyers Club Oscar winner.

Leto plays Ares, a highly sophisticated Program who enters the real world from the digital world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with an artificial intelligence being. Evan Peters portrays villain Julian Dillinger. Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Hasan Minhaj, Gillian Anderson and Sarah Desjardins round out the cast.

What do we see in the trailer? The red Tron cycles speeding into our modern cities and slicing police cars in half. Those Tron forklift things fly through the air — you know, those obstacles you’re suppose to shoot in the video game. As billed, it’s the video game world invading ours. “Ready?” says Bridges’ Kevin Flynn. “Because there’s no going back.”

Bridges, who starred in Tron: Legacy (2010) and the original Tron (1982), also returns for the third installment.

The script was written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Steven Lisberger produce alongside executive producer Russell Allen.
