Eight-year-old boy dies of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) in Karnataka

BENGALURU: An eight-year-old boy from Dattarajpur village in

Tirthahalli

taluk died on Thursday night at KMC Hospital in Manipal, while his sister survived the illness.
The siblings, Rachit and Ramya, were first taken to J C Hospital in Tirthahalli in early April, showing signs of elevated temperature, weakness and sickness.
After their KFD confirmation 15 days prior, they were moved to KMC Hospital Manipal on April 6, receiving free treatment through the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka (ABArK) programme. Ramya's health improved, but Rachit's condition deteriorated.
Rachit, a class 2 student at

Vagdevi School

in Thirthahalli, was the son of Ramu and Savita.

The deputy commissioner Gurudatta Hegade has requested a thorough investigation into the incident.
The previous KFD-related casualty in Karnataka occurred on March 15, when a 69-year-old woman from Kattinamane in N.R Pura taluk of Chikkamagaluru district lost her life.
KFD, an illness spread by ticks, is common in the Western Ghat Region. The authorities plan to launch a new KFD vaccine by 2026.
