An important step towards the international recognition of Nisyros as a Global Geopark was taken yesterday at the Ministry of Shipping, with the presentation of the digital representation of the volcano and the island's Geopark. The ambitious project, which is in full swing, aims to highlight the geological uniqueness of Nisyros and its inclusion in the international UNESCO network.
The presentation highlighted the unique geomorphological peculiarities of the island and the importance of protecting and utilizing such a special natural treasure. The effort to document and promote the candidacy file has the scientific community on its side, with the key contribution of the Geology professor of the National University of Athens, Ms. Evi Nomikou, who has dedicated many years of work to the research of volcanic areas of Greece, among them Nisyros and Kos.
Ms. Nomikou has undertaken the scientific documentation of the file, making the candidate's geological wealth of the island capable of standing up to claims on the world map.
The initiative is accompanied by the digital platform and application of the Nisyros Geopark, which is available at www.nisyrosgeopark.gr, offering access to interactive content, scientific data, and information for visitors and researchers.
The South Aegean Region actively supports the initiative, aiming to promote Nisyros as a destination of high natural and cultural value. As noted, the inclusion of Nisyros in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network is not only a matter of recognition but a tool for a sustainable development plan that connects tourism, education, and the local economy. “Nisyros deserves to be recognized globally, and we will achieve it.
