Tinubu, who was represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, spoke in Kaduna on Sunday at the grand finale of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day celebration (NADCEL).

The event, themed ‘Developing the soldier first concept: Imperative for the Nigerian Army’s transformation drive,’ marked the 162nd anniversary of the force in the country.

The president hailed the army’s role in preserving Nigeria’s sovereignty since 1863 and described the occasion as a time for reflection and celebration, honouring soldiers who had made sacrifices to defend the nation.

He noted that Nigeria continues to face existential threats, including terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and separatist agitations.

“These are existential threats that require a united, firm, and uncompromising response,” Tinubu said.

“The army brought the Nigerian civil war to a close with the immortal words, ‘no victor, no vanquished,’ reminding Nigerians of their shared destiny.”

While acknowledging the ongoing reforms in the army, he commended the force for its contributions to peacekeeping missions across Africa and other parts of the world.

The president urged troops to continue operating with honour, discipline, and a sense of justice, while assuring them of his administration’s support.

Tinubu commended Olufemi Oluyede, the chief of army staff (COAS), for his leadership and professionalism, while extending his condolences to the families of fallen soldiers.

“They have fought for peace and stood for principle,” he added.
