Tinubu Emphasizes Need for Functional Capital City

President Bola Tinubu has strongly affirmed that a functional capital city serves as the essential foundation upon which a truly functioning nation is built. This assertion was made during the inauguration of the Connector Road CN8 (Asuquo Okon Way) and other critical connecting roads in the Dakibiyu District of Abuja, where the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, highlighted the ongoing infrastructure development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as concrete evidence of his administration’s commitment to forging an inclusive and prosperous Nigeria. He stressed that a city with paved roads, consistent lighting, and smooth traffic flow sends a clear message to the world about a purposeful and present government.

The President emphasized the immediate and lasting benefits of these road projects, stating that they would significantly shorten commutes, alleviate congestion, and, most crucially, enable livelihoods to flourish. This tangible progress, he explained, embodies the "Renewed Hope" agenda, translating policy into practical impact. Shops will open, markets will thrive, children will reach schools faster, and emergency services will arrive more promptly, directly improving the daily lives of citizens. The administration's vision for Abuja extends far beyond its glittering central districts to encompass its outskirts, margins, and previously underserved communities. Every newly constructed road and completed bridge represents a firm stride towards a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria, serving as a bold signature of urban renewal and economic revitalization.

A modern and functional capital, President Tinubu noted, instills confidence, attracts vital investment, and, most importantly, restores the dignity of its residents. He reiterated that the capital must mirror the strength and dignity of all its inhabitants, ensuring that development is universally accessible and that governance does not discriminate based on geography. He conveyed the administration's steadfast commitment to supporting the FCTA, pledging to provide necessary resources, policy backing, and institutional cooperation to ensure projects are delivered on time and to the highest standards, aiming to create a capital that serves everyone.

During the event, President Tinubu extended glowing tributes to the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, and his dedicated team at the Federal Capital Territory Administration, commending their widely recognized sense of urgency and outstanding execution of these vital projects. Minister Wike himself recounted the previously deplorable state of the area before the intervention, highlighting the rapid turnaround from the project's award in September 2023 to its commissioning. The newly inaugurated roads play a pivotal role in connecting key public and private institutions, including the Police Service Commission Headquarters, FCT High Court Jabi, Code of Conduct Tribunal Headquarters, the new FCT Division of the Court of Appeal, and the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, along with numerous residential areas.

Separately, regarding recent reports, Minister Wike, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, has firmly denied any land allocation to his children in the FCT, dismissing such claims as sponsored blackmail. Olayinka affirmed that such attempts to undermine the Minister would not deter his ongoing developmental efforts in the FCT, which align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
