Thompson Twins Could Represent Jamaica

Amen and Ausar Thompson, NBA players, have expressed interest in representing Jamaica on the international stage and have initiated the process of obtaining Jamaican citizenship. This decision was announced during a meet and greet session organized by the Jamaica Basketball Association and the Bob Marley Foundation in Kingston.

The Thompson twins, who made significant impacts during their sophomore NBA seasons, are eligible for Jamaican citizenship through their father, Troy Thompson, who is Jamaican. Their uncle, Mark Thompson, also represented Jamaica in the 400 metres hurdles at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Amen Thompson expressed his long-held admiration for Jamaica's "gold medal culture," citing Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake as inspirations. He stated that the opportunity to represent Jamaica, instead of the USA, means a lot to him.

Ausar Thompson echoed his brother's sentiments, emphasizing his openness to representing Jamaica and highlighting the significance of the nation's culture. However, current FIBA rules stipulate that a team can only have one "naturalized player" on its roster, meaning only one of the foreign-born Thompson brothers can play for Jamaica unless FIBA changes the rule.

LeBron James has lauded Amen and Ausar Thompson for their exceptional athleticism. In the 2024-25 season, Amen averaged 14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game for the Houston Rockets, earning a spot on the All-Defensive First Team. Ausar, playing for the Detroit Pistons, averaged 10.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game, overcoming an earlier blood clot issue. Both players are seen as valuable assets to any team, including Team USA, given their defensive prowess.
