This Forgotten Legal Drama Has One of Stanley Tucci's Best Performances

Although the show has been largely forgotten over the years, the acclaimed first season, with its buzzworthy twists and serialized mystery, was influential in the rise of prestige TV as we know it. with his portrayal of debauched billionaire Richard Cross. Tucci plays Richard with a mix of charm and a sinister quality that makes him a prime suspect in the central murder. The scenes in which he tries to scheme, manipulate, and covertly hint at what's to come feel like his scenes in Conclave, but with the drama dialed all the way up.

Murder One is a legal drama that centers on a group of lawyers led by Ted Hoffman (). They're tasked with defending Neil Avadon (), a heartthrob actor accused of murdering his girlfriend Jessica Costello. The first season manages to draw its central murder mystery out into a whopping twenty-three episodes, thanks to . Part of what makes the mystery so strong is the compelling ambiguity in the character of Richard Cross. Jessica's sister, Julie Costello (), describes him as being like a father to Jessica, but Ted doesn't trust Richard and says he's capable of anything. Stanley Tucci perfectly conveys the sense that Richard is trying to do right by the deceased girl but also has dark secrets. The actor manages to find a balance with the complex character, enhancing the mystery of the season.

Though it is a more widely known topic now, Murder One boldly portrayed how dark Hollywood could be for young women decades before MeToo caught the world's attention. The character who most embodies the sick, exploitative side of Hollywood is Richard Cross. Tucci doesn't hold back on how creepy the character can be, even as he infuses him with a charm and a breezy sense of humor. The role is perfectly suited to Tucci's strengths, with plenty of opportunities for sassy, cutting remarks and smug confidence. His easy likability makes the audience understand why Cross is able to get away with the things he does. Even when the storyline goes in wild, melodramatic directions, , showcasing his incredible talent.

Murder One has a . (from ) shines as Ted Hoffman's aggrieved wife, and (seen in ) is excellent as a prosecutor who provides a foil to the defense lawyers. These talented actors make Murder One the intriguing series it is. The show also features guest appearances from several actors who were unknown at the time but would go on to become recognizable names. In one of his earliest TV roles, (who is currently starring in ) plays an intern at the law firm. The series also features memorable appearances from (now known from ) and (who later worked in ). But, even with a stacked ensemble and exciting guest actors, Stanley Tucci is the clear highlight of the show.

Murder One features . The shocking twists sometimes strain credulity, but they're never boring. In the hands of another actor, Richard Cross might almost be too cartoonishly debauched, especially considering the attempt at redemption the show gives him, but Tucci sells the entire, wonderfully provocative story.
