Teeth-chattering cold remains in place into Tuesday, warming midweek

SALT LAKE CITY () — Happy Monday, Utah! It has been a brutally cold start to MLK Day with the coldest temperatures of the season so far being felt across the state.

We’re sitting on the western edge of a big trough that’s covering much of the eastern and central U.S. Right now, there’s a steady northerly flow in place, which is allowing for the deep freezer feels outside. Temperatures have dropped into the single-digits and teens this morning with wind chill values in the single-digits along the Wasatch Front, below zero in the mountain valleys. This cold air is moving in behind a mainly dry front that’s sliding out of the area this afternoon.

With the cold air in place, overnight lows will once again become dangerously cold across the state. Temperatures are forecast to drop back down into the single digits for much of the Wasatch Front, wind chill values expected to dip below zero. With temperatures this cold, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in just 30 minutes. Be sure the youngsters are well prepared for the cold at the bus stop tomorrow morning. So, after another round of teeth chattering cold temperatures early Tuesday morning, things should start warming up through the latter half of the week.

Looking ahead to Friday and the weekend, models are hinting at our next storm arriving sometime Saturday into Sunday. There’s a lot of agreement on the big picture, but the details are still fuzzy this far out. If things play out right, southern Utah might finally see some much-needed precipitation. Stay tuned!
