Cold front sweeps into Utah bringing frigid temperatures
SALT LAKE CITY () – Happy Friday, Utah! Our much-anticipated cold front is making its way into the region from the north as it keeps moving south throughout the day.
As it approaches, winds higher up will pick up, helping clear out surface inversions and improving air quality in the valleys. Before the front arrives later this afternoon, expect temperatures to climb a few degrees above normal in most areas.
Clouds will start increasing over northern Utah and southwest Wyoming during the day, with light snow possible in the mountains.
Since the air is pretty dry, any snow will be limited and mainly happen after the front moves through early Saturday morning. Frigid air moving in from the north could stir up some lake-effect snow near the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake, especially from places like Tooele to Bountiful and Spanish Fork to Payson. This could bring 1-4 inches of snow in localized areas between roughly 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday.
In the mountains, central and northern Utah could see 1-4 inches, with higher amounts in spots like the Upper Cottonwoods if lake-effect bands really kick in. By Saturday afternoon, the snow will taper off, though a few lingering showers might stick around into Saturday night.
Behind the front, Saturday’s highs will struggle to get above freezing, with southern Utah reaching the 40s. Saturday night into Sunday will be exceptionally cold, expect temperatures in the single digits and teens for most places, with southern Utah dipping into the upper teens and low 20s. Make sure people, pets, and pipes are taken care of!
Looking ahead to Sunday and beyond, cold weather will hang around through midweek. Sunday morning will be 5-15° below normal, and a weak system could bring a few snow showers to the northern mountains.
By Monday morning, temperatures will bottom out again, with some areas dipping below zero. Wind chills will make it feel even colder. We’ll start to see some gradual warming midweek, with daytime highs slowly getting back up near seasonal averages by Wednesday.
Early guidance for next week shows another cold front later in the week, while others lean toward a slow warm-up. For now, plan on chilly conditions to stick around for at least the next several days. Stay warm!
