Taraba Assembly denies move to impeach deputy governor
The Taraba State House of Assembly has debunked rumours of an alleged plot to impeach the ailing Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Alkali, affirming that he is making steady progress in his recuperation.
Addressing journalists on Thursday in Jalingo, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Nelson C. Len, categorically dismissed speculations that the Assembly was planning to replace Alkali with the current Deputy Speaker.
The twenty-four members, through Len, insisted that no such proposal was being considered by the Assembly.
Lens emphasised that the deputy governor’s health situation is not comparable to that of the late former Governor Danbaba Suntai, who died years after sustaining severe injuries in a plane crash.
According to him, Alkali is recovering well, and the House has not constituted any medical panel to assess his current state, as there is no basis for such action at this time.
“We urge the public to disregard the baseless rumours circulating about an impending impeachment or replacement.
“There are no discussions or intentions to relieve the deputy governor of his duties,” Lens said.
Alkali, who has been absent from public functions for over nine months due to illness, was recently flown back from Egypt and is reportedly receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.
His prolonged absence had sparked widespread speculation and concern, especially due to the state government’s silence on his health status.
The House, however, maintained that there is no constitutional crisis and reassured citizens of stability within the state’s leadership.
