Take-It-Back Demands Release Of Lecturer, Dr Ahmad Detained Over Facebook Post | Sahara Reporters

Dr. Ahmad was remanded in prison following a complaint filed by a politically exposed individual, accusing him of defamation and criminal intimidation over a Facebook post.

Pro-democracy group, the Take-It-Back Movement, Bauchi State Chapter, has expressed deep concerns over the arrest and detention of Dr. Abubakar Ahmad, a lecturer at the Federal College of Horticulture, Dadin Kowa, Gombe State.

Dr. Ahmad was remanded in prison following a complaint filed by a politically exposed individual, accusing him of defamation and criminal intimidation over a Facebook post.

But TIB in a statement on Wednesday signed by State Coordinator, Comrade Nazif Nuhu Mohammed, regretted that the charges against Ahmad were a calculated attempt to suppress dissent and intimidate critical voices.

"The charges stem not from a criminal act but from an exercise of his constitutional right to free expression, which we believe is now being weaponized to silence dissent and intimidate critical voices," the TIB stated.

The group believed that Dr. Ahmad's detention is a clear case of abuse of power and intimidation, and demands his immediate release on bail.

"We find it unacceptable that a lecturer and law-abiding citizen is being targeted, harassed, and imprisoned without regard for democratic norms and civil liberties," Comrade Mohammed stated.

The pro-democracy group, however, called for an end to the use of courts to settle personal and political grievances and respect for the right to free speech as guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.

TIB also demanded for an independent oversight into the abuse of criminal complaints as a tool for intimidation.

"We are in contact with Dr. Ahmad's legal counsel and his family and will be closely monitoring the legal process," Comrade Mohammed said.

"We call on all rights groups, civil society actors, and the media to join us in demanding justice and amplifying Dr. Ahmad's story."

The group expressed its stands against tyranny, whether from state actors or private individuals, promising that it will continue to advocate for justice, accountability, and the protection of all citizens' rights.

"The Take-It-Back Movement stands firm against tyranny whether from state actors or private individuals. We will continue to advocate for justice, accountability, and the protection of all citizens' rights," Comrade Mohammed emphasised.
