BRIDGEVIEW, IL — A man with out-of-state addresses is charged in the horrific crash Wednesday afternoon, when police said he plowed into a car with a mother and her two young children while driving a stolen mail truck. One of the children, a 7-year-old boy, is said to remain in extremely critical condition.

Miguel Alvarado, 35, with last known addresses in Ozone Park, NY, and Beaumont, TX, is facing multiple felony charges from Bedford Park, Oak Lawn and Bridgeview. He remains hospitalized at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and is expected to be transferred to Cermak Hospital at Cook County Jail.

Alvarado is facing felony charges from Bridgeview, Oak Lawn and Bedford Park evolving from events leading up to Wednesday’s crash at 87th Street and Roberts Road. Additional federal charges may be forthcoming.

On Wednesday morning, Alvarado was being placed under arrest for disorderly conduct in Bedford Park, when police there said he jumped into one of their patrol cars and took off. Alvarado is believed to have driven around the Chicago Ridge and Park Lawn areas until the police vehicle became disabled.

Alvarado is then alleged to have carjacked a USPS truck, forcibly taking the vehicle from a postal worker. Around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Bridgeview police said the Alvarado was heading northbound on Roberts Road at a speed of 50 mph, when he slammed into a car driven by a mother with her two children in the back seat. Both children were in child safety seats. Photos circulating social media showed the back end of the mother’s car completely crushed.

Alvarado was not in court Friday afternoon because he remains hospitalized, but Bridgeview police were seeking Alvarado’s appearance at a future date on felony charges of aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle and aggravated reckless driving.

He has also been charged by Oak Lawn and Bedford Park police with separate counts of vehicular hijacking. Federal charges may be forthcoming because the theft of USPS vehicle was involved.

Alvarado is due back in court April 26 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
