Sunnyside Diner opens in Huntington

Published 14 hours ago2 minute read

During a time when diners on Long Island seem to be endangered, Huntington’s got a reason to celebrate: Sunnyside Diner has opened on New York Avenue in the space that was Skorpios by Avli.

Sunnyside Diner is owned by chef Kelvin Alfaro and managed by his nephew, Lucio Alfaro. Kelvin Alfaro owns two other Long Island eateries, Blue Angel Diner in Plainview and Station Coffee Shop in Huntington Station.

"Diners are fading out and that’s what my uncle loves to do, and they don’t want that to go away," Lucio Alfaro said. "They want to keep that atmosphere and type of food."

The menu includes Greek favorites such as chicken souvlaki ($16.99) and chicken or lamb gyros ($16.99). Breakfast shows up big with chicken and waffles ($15.99) as well as chocolate chip pancakes ($14.99). Lighter dishes include wraps, paninis and salads.

The restaurant has seating for 47 diners and its decor honors Skorpios' 50-year history of serving Mediterranean fare with artwork featuring the island of Santorini, the Parthenon in Athens and other Greek destinations.

The diner opened on the heels of the closing of two Long Island diners last month: Baldwin Coach Diner and Huntington’s Golden Coach Diner.

Sunnyside Diner, 340 New York Ave., Huntington, 631-425-7575, Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
