Speculation Surrounds Kwankwaso's Potential Defection to APC

The political landscape in Kano State is currently abuzz with speculation surrounding the potential defection of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). While the APC in Kano has expressed its willingness to welcome Kwankwaso, it has also laid down strict conditions, including a public apology for past derogatory remarks against President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. This move has been met with strong denials from the NNPP, adding further complexity to the unfolding political drama.
Abdullahi Abbas, the APC Chairman in Kano, has stated that the party is open to receiving decampees from all political parties, with particular attention drawn to speculations about Kwankwaso's impending arrival. Abbas emphasized that while joining a political party is a constitutional right, the APC would be Kwankwaso's last political refuge, given his strained relationships with other political groups. He also cautioned that joining the APC would not shield anyone from accountability for past corrupt actions, as anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and ICPC would continue to operate without interference.
In a firm stance, Abbas declared that the APC would not tolerate the existence of cult-like associations within its ranks under the guise of political activities. He insisted that prospective decampees who have previously made disparaging comments against President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima must offer a public apology as a sign of remorse and respect.
The APC has directed its ward chapters to open registers for new decampees, regardless of their political or social status, in accordance with the party's constitution. This directive aims to ensure a smooth integration process for new members while upholding the party's principles and values.
However, the NNPP has vehemently denied any plans for Kwankwaso to defect to the APC. Hashimu Dungurawa, the NNPP Chairman in Kano State, dismissed the rumors as baseless and driven by desperation. He asserted that Kwankwaso does not need to consult anyone before making political decisions and emphasized that there are no intentions to defect to the APC.
Dungurawa described the speculation as mere mischief, expressing confidence in the NNPP administration's progress in restoring law and order in Kano State. He affirmed that the party has no business with the APC and remains focused on its goals and objectives.
Despite the NNPP's denial, the APC stands firm on its conditions for accepting Kwankwaso into its fold. The demand for a public apology highlights the importance of loyalty and respect within the APC, signaling that the party will not compromise its principles for political expediency.
The situation remains fluid, with both the APC and NNPP presenting contrasting narratives. Whether Kwankwaso will eventually seek refuge in the APC remains to be seen, but the ongoing saga underscores the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of Nigerian politics.
