Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones Review

The Sony WH 1000XM6 noise canceling headphones have been released three years after the WH 1000XM5 launch. Priced at $449, these headphones feature better audio quality, a smarter design, and improved Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), making them more premium than ever. A key question is whether these new features justify the higher price point.

The WH 1000XM6 combines world-class noise cancellation, immersive sound, and a foldable lightweight design, catering to comfort and portability. Sony has reintroduced the folding design, addressing past issues and enhancing comfort. This makes the headset suitable for commuters, travelers, and audiophiles seeking high-performance audio without unnecessary bulk.

While the WH 1000XM5 brought a design refresh, the WH 1000XM6 retains a similar look but emphasizes improved sound quality, stronger noise canceling, and comfort upgrades. The $449 price tag is $50 more than its predecessor and $20 above the Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones.

One of the most significant updates is the return of the foldable hinge, allowing the headphones to collapse into a smaller case with a magnetic clasp. The headband is wider to reduce pressure, and the ear cups are now removable and replaceable. The power button has been redesigned for easier differentiation from the noise canceling button. These upgrades enhance travel-friendliness, durability, and daily usability.

The WH 1000XM6 includes upgraded drivers and a new noise canceling chip. Sony claims the new ANC system surpasses the WH 1000XM5 and all other noise canceling headphones, including those from Apple and Bose. Sound tuning is informed by Sony’s in-house music studio engineers, providing clearer vocals, more detail, and lively bass. Users can customize sound via a 10-band equalizer in the Headphones Connect app. The transparency mode remains natural, activated by covering the right ear cup.

Multipoint Bluetooth and LDAC codec support are retained for convenience and high-resolution audio streaming. Spatial audio upmixing features, designed to simulate environments like coffee shops or movie theaters, are included but may seem artificial. Battery life remains at 30 hours with noise cancellation and 40 without. The headphones can now be charged while in use, though this requires both a charging cable and a 3.5mm audio cable, as USB-C audio is not supported.

Voice call quality is improved with six microphones and AI-powered beamforming to isolate speech. The Sony WH 1000XM6 improves upon its predecessor with better sound, stronger noise cancellation, and ergonomic enhancements. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it stands out as a top-tier noise canceling headphone. However, the $449 price may be a barrier for some, though it could be a worthwhile investment for those needing high-quality audio and noise cancellation for travel or daily use.
