Snow falls in Frederick County ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Residents across Frederick County saw accumulations build through periods of snowfall on Sunday afternoon.

At around 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, all westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed near the Myersville exit because of a jackknifed tractor trailer, according to Danny Allman of the State Highway Administration.

Between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, areas of Frederick County saw different totals — Ballenger Creek area had about two inches of snow, west of Libertytown saw about three inches, northeast of Thurmont saw about three inches, and west of the Fort Detrick area saw close to four inches, according to Kyle Pallozzi, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office.

Pallozzi said at around 5:20 p.m. that the bulk of the snowfall was over, and that there would be light snowfall until around 6:30 or 7:30 p.m.

Frederick County was in an active snow emergency as of 7 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation.

Frederick Mayor Michael O'Connor declared a snow emergency for Frederick at 8 a.m. on Sunday, according to a city press release.

Cars must be removed from snow emergency routes as of 8 a.m. on Sunday, and downtown parking garages will be open for free off-street parking, according to the release. Cars must be removed from the garages by 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Frederick emergency routes can be viewed at cityoffrederickmd.gov/545/Emergency-Routes.

Meters and parking garages will be free on Monday.

Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack B implemented a snow emergency plan for Frederick County at 7 a.m. on Sunday.

Maryland State Police put a snow emergency plan in effect for Frederick County as of 1:45 a.m. on Monday.

The following highways have been designated as snow emergency routes:

• U.S. 15, 40, 40 Alternate, 340

• Interstates 70, 270

• Md. 17, 26, 27, 28, 31, 75, 76, 79, 80, 85, 140, 144FA, 180, 194

No one is permitted to park a vehicle on any highway designated as a snow emergency route.

The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office also issued a cold weather advisory from 4 a.m. Monday to 1 p.m. Tuesday for western Maryland.

The service said temperatures could be up to 30 degrees below normal, and that wind chills of up to 15 degrees below zero are expected.

The National Weather Service advised that the wind chills on exposed skin could cause frostbite, and that pipes could burst because of cold temperatures.

The service advised to dress in layers, including a hat, face mask and gloves, if you must go outside.

Frederick County Public Schools and offices, and county government offices, were already scheduled to be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The county Board of Elections, Department of Social Services, Health Department, Courts and State's Attorney's Office, Transit, and county public libraries also will be closed on Monday, according to the county website.

Some facilities under the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling will be open on Monday with limited customer support. Recycling collection will not be impacted by the holiday, according to the county website.

Frederick offices will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Residential trash will be collected on Tuesday, according to the city's website. Residential yard waste will not be collected on Monday and will resume at a normal schedule on Jan. 27.

Commercial downtown business trash will be collected on a normal schedule, according to the website.

The Department of Housing and Human Services will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Food Bank will also be closed, according to the website.
