Cold morning expected as gush of polar air descends on South Florida
As a gush of polar air descends on South Florida, with temperatures around Lake Okeechobee forecast to dip into the upper 30s to near 40 degrees overnight Friday into Saturday, Palm Beach County was scheduled to open a cold weather shelter in Belle Glade on Friday, Jan. 24.
Wind chill temperatures were expected in the upper 20s in Glades and Hendry counties.
The shelter was to open between 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Belle Glade Transitional Shelter and Lake Village at the Glades. The shelter is located at 341 NW 11th Street. At 5:15 p.m., officials also announced a second shelter, on the eastern side of the county, would open at the Westgate Community Center Gymnasium located at 3691 Oswego Ave. in West Palm Beach.
The National Weather Service also issued a cold weather advisory for inland areas of Palm Beach County for between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday when wind chill temperatures are forecast to be as low as 30 to 35 degrees. Areas included are Royal Palm Beach, Wellington, The Acreage, Lion Country Safar, Belle Glade, and Pahokee.
The Palm Beach County Division of Emergency Management said Friday it was continuing to watch weather forecasts for coastal Palm Beach County to determine if more shelters are needed.
An overnight low temperature in the mid-40s was forecast for West Palm Beach, but the National Weather Service in Miami said wind chill temperatures in the upper 30s were possible inland from the coast.
The forecast calls for a warm-up heading into Saturday day, with a forecast calling for a high near 67 with breezy conditions that include gusts as high as 21 mph. Saturday night, expect a low around 64.
Sunday calls for a partly sunny day with a high near 70 and less windy conditions. Sunday night lows may dip to 64.
